For many people San José, is just a quick stopover on their way to the coast or the mountains. But other people make San José their base to enjoy Costa Rica as pretty much all roads lead to San José in Costa Rica! There's lots to do in the area! Here are some of the most popular activities (and you don't need to be a Casa 69 client for us to help arrange these for you!):

San José City

San Jose Downtown, Costa Rica

This half day city tour lets you see some highlights of San Jose including La Sabana Metropolitan Park, a walking tour through the historic National Theatre, a museum, the University of Costa Rica, the Supreme Court and various other sites of interest. There is a brief stop at an artisan's market where you can browse and shop for souvenirs.

The tour will begin by the route to the Northern Zone of our Country in the Province of Alajuela towards the spectacular Arenal Volcano. Upon arrival to the volcano you can admire the most active volcano in Costa Rica and will have the opportunity to relax in the hot springs of the exclusive resort Baldí Hot Springs while watching the volcano. On this tour, we will visit the city of Grecia, famous for its metallic Parish and the city of Sarchi, the cradle of national crafts and makers of furniture with traditional oxcarts made out of fine woods. On the road, a delicious regional lunch will be served before continuing to the San Carlos region, a zone specialized in agriculture and cattle. The tour will continue to La Fortuna, the town closest to the Arenal volcano to enjoy the remainder of the afternoon in the hot springs. While at the foot of the volcano dinner will be provided. After dinner, we will continue the tour towards San José.

Arenal Volcano National Park

Arenal Volcano National Park has an area of 12,124 hectares. Before 1968, this volcano was considered extinct and was even thought not to be a volcano at all. It was known as Mount Arenal.

This tour involves leave San Jose for the day accompanied by a bilingual naturalist guide. After getting through the Braulio Carrillo National Park, you will stop for a traditional Costa Rican breakfast. Then, you will get off the bus and embark on the most exciting leg of this excursion: the jungle boat trip through the canals of the world-renowned Tortuguero National Park. After arriving at noon you will enjoy a delicious regional lunch. Then you will hike the trails to see the tropical rain forest, and to top it all off we will take a trip on boat through the Tortuguero National Park. There is an abundant diversity of exotic birds such as toucans and herons. There are also crocodiles, turtles, and numerous butterflies, including the astonishing Blue Morpho Butterfly which can be closely observed during our boat trip.

Finally, at the end of the afternoon you will return to San Jose full of memories and pictures of this fabulous experience in the world-renowned Tortuguero canals.

The tour begins early in the morning from your hotel in San José traveling by bus to Puntarenas Harbor. (2 hours). The catamaran will be waiting with a caring and kind crew to take you to the beautiful Tortuga Island. The trip in the catamaran (1 ½ hours) is very scenic and offers the opportunity to enjoy the sun, listen to tropical music and taste delicious cocktails! Once on the island, you will have time to swim in the tranquil waters and walk on the white sands of this picturesque beach. A delicious lunch will be served outdoors under the palm trees and the bar on the island will be open during your stay. After lunch, there will be time to relax and rest or to explore the island. Come with us and experience one of the modalities of watching and safely enjoying the Premontane Rain Forest. Here our highly trained guides in safety, customer service and nature will accompany you at all times ensuring that your experience complements your vacations or leisure time, with the maximum benefit.

On the journey of ascent to the Poás Volcano National Park at 2,708 meters in altitude, we will make a stop to enjoy an exquisite typical breakfast in the producing facilities and plantations of the famous Doka Coffee State where we can see the coffee process. Upon arrival to the Poás Volcano we will admire the main breathtaking and gigantic crater active with sulphur fumaroles. Then we will take a hike through the trails that will allow one to see the closely the different ecosystems, the rain and cloud park forests… 

We will continue our mountainous route to one of the main attractions of the zone, visiting La Paz Waterfall Gardens (Jardines de la Catarata de la Paz) trek through its spectacular trails that lead to viewpoints of beautiful waterfalls, as well as a butterfly farm (vivarium), aviary, hummingbird, canaries garden, felines and serpentarium. The tour begins with a 6:00 a.m. pick-up at the hotel in San Jose. The bus will pass through scenic landscapes and green fields up to the riverside where professional guides will give the necessary instructions for precise and safe rowing. Poás Volcano

Poas Volcano, Costa Rica

The Poás Volcano is one of the world's largest geysers with an awesome crater, over 1.5 km wide! The volcano is active but completely safe for viewing. The tour begins with a beautiful drive through the lush coffee plantations and flower farms of the area. In addition to the volcano, the surrounding National Park is a 10 acre preserve rich with tropical vegetation and animal wildlife. Leaving San Jose at 7 am, we head to the Pacific Coast along the old Spanish route in use since 1606. After a breakfast stop we reach our destination and take a jungle boat tour that goes along the Tarcoles River. Bilingual guides will introduce you to the world of crocodiles and exotic birds. After the boat tour we'll arrive at Punta Leona Beach Resort. This exotic paradise is surrounded by 750 acres of lush tropical rainforest, white sand beaches and the blue waters of the Pacific. You will have the day to enjoy the activities offered by the resort and lunch will be served. If interested you can take the included guided tours through the transitional rainforest, the tour takes about 1 1/2 hours, or you can relax at the pool or on the beach.
